Statement:

I make paintings and polymer clay/ceramic sculptures inspired by imagery sourced from collage, nature, and imagination to visualize new celestial and terrestrial worlds. I use a repeating cast of characters such as a “blockhead” figure with a square head, eyes from Ingres’ painting of the Princess de Broglie, and a unique tree that I once discovered on a local hike. This tree was a tall, cobra-like form that had a diamond head and a central knot like a nose. In my work, I use this form of the tree in paintings, on Staffordshire-like mantlepiece tubular “spill vases” or alone as stacked cairns or totems.

Like a game of telephone, I am interested in how abstracting a single form can result in infinite permutations in art. Mixed together in the work, these 2-D and 3-D characters act out loose narratives against a backdrop of stars, clouds and niched interiors. I love allowing the sculptures and paintings to jump their fences and mingle together in a big fenceless open floorplan universe.
